Growing up in the New York City area afforded Grace Haverty the opportunity to visit the Brooklyn Museum of Art as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Although she loved art she never considered pursuing a career in that field. Grace worked for an advertising agency on Madison Avenue until she and husband, Michael, moved to Illinois. After years of studying, Grace is now a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Western Federation of Watercolors, Arizona Watercolor Association and the Pastel Society of America where she is a signature member as well as Master Pastelist. Grace has received countless awards and been published in numerous publications nationally and internationally. Grace teaches water classes in Scottsdale and Minnesota. She summers on Ottertail Lake and is active at Art of the Lakes in Battle Lake.

Snowbound, Charles Beck

Framed 16×14 Woodcut print number 119 of 200. Donated by Robert G. Wright. Charles (Chuck) Beck, one of the most recognized artists in Minnesota, was born in Fergus Falls, MN in 1923. He studied art under Cyrus Running at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN during the 1940?s and graduated in 1948 after taking time off to serve as a pilot in the Navel Air Force. Chuck continued his education at the University of Iowa and received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1950. He returned to his hometown of Fergus Falls where he was a sign painter. In 1953, Chuck enrolled at the University of Minnesota and studied under Cameron Booth, Walter Quirt, and Malcolm Meyers. It was during this time that he was introduced to woodblock printing. Beck joined the faculty at Fergus Falls Community College (now M State) in 1960, where he taught for 27 years. Concordia granted him an honorary doctorate in 1980, and in 2006, M State honored him by naming its new gallery after him. Beck was influenced by the landscape of Otter Tail County and made it the predominant subject matter of his artwork, choosing to create an interpretation of his own experiences and vision rather than exact representations within his work. Beck continued to create art until his death in September 2017 at the age of 94.

Flowers, Ruth Hanson

Original 12×34 framed watercolor. Donated by Robert G. Wright. Ruth Hanson, having grown up on a dairy farm in West Central Minnesota, has been heavily inspired by landscapes, nature, and farm life in her artistry. Ruth concentrates on oil pastel, watercolor batik, and watercolor and gouache, which she fines to be expressive mediums easy to use and to teach. Along with painting and drawing, she uses calligraphy to illustrate Scripture. She received a BS in Art Education from Minnesota State University Moorhead after student teaching at the American International School in Vienna, Austria. After teaching high school art for four years, she attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul as a special student to combine church and art. Ruth has illustrated three published books. For the past 16 summers, she has run a small art and gift shop in Vining, MN selling her artwork and several other artisans? work and market products. Ruth has shown her work national and internationally.

Mister Attitude

Framed 16×12 watercolor by Bonnie Pfeffer  Donated by Bonnie Pfeffer. Bonnie Pfeffer has lived in Battle Lake for 50 years. She is a retired teacher, having taught elementary students, mostly 2nd graders, for 26 years in Ashby, MN. Bonnie has always loved art in many forms and through her teaching was able to enjoy that with her students. About 6 years ago Bonnie took a mini class on the ?Grid Method? of enlarging and transferring images, offered by Bonita Roberts through Art of the Lakes Gallery. That began her personal art journey. Soft pastel has become Bonnie?s primary medium, though she enjoys watercolor, charcoal, and drawing. She is influenced by the wonder of nature, usually displayed in the form of landscape painting. Bonnie paints what brings her joy and contented feelings.

Fish Houses on Battle Lake

This framed 16×12 watercolor print captures one of Minnesota’s favorite past times by Gretchen Farnberg. Donated by Bonnie Olson. Gretchen Farnberg, born and raised in Fergus Falls, passed away in 2018 at 84. She lived in Redwood Falls, MN, for forty years, and moved back to Fergus Falls in 1990 to ?be around people interested in the arts.? A child of the depression, Gretchen found that creating something from nothing was a ?jolt of joy? and this supported her lifelong love of creating. Gretchen graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1951 and continued studies at the University of Minnesota and Southwest State University. She also studied under Hazel Belvo in Grand Marais. Gretchen exhibited and taught with numerous organizations and was active in the Art of the Lakes, New York Mills Cultural Center, the Grand Marais Art Colony, Glacial Ridge Artists of Alexandria, and A Center for the Arts in Fergus Falls.
